Artisan fishing is often, but not always, less stressful on marine populations, and reflects the wisdom of our ancestors. However, it is more labor intensive and the cost is much higher compared to the large-scale modern industrial fishing.
In the present day, the impact from international free trade, advances in industrial fishing methods, drastic decline in fish stocks due to overfishing, all resulted in difficulties in practicing artisan fishing. Consequently, more and more young people leave the fishing villages in search of work, and the traditional artisan fishing culture is at stake.
Here, we will introduce some of Penghu’s traditional artisan fishing methods, including bao-dun, stone weir, collecting on tidal flats, qian-gu (beach seine), set net, and gang-yu.
